Thanks to Veriff, Scrambly’s platform is now secure and generating high-quality advertising traffic for its clients
Scrambly is a revolutionary adtech reward platform, which enables users to earn cash rewards in real time by interacting with brands, testing products, answering surveys, and discovering new games, and apps.
Scrambly’s consumer USP is that, unlike its competitors, the firm’s minimum withdrawal level is set at $1 and customers can cash out immediately with funds arriving in their PayPal account within seconds. The firm’s B2B value proposition is that it generates significant high-value advertising traffic for app and game brand developers on Scrambly’s platform. The firm also has a zero-tolerance stance on fraud, which compares to many of its competitors who consider a level of fraud inevitable and factor this into their business structure.
At the time of writing, Scrambly has more than 100,000 users in the US and has ambitious growth plans. The platform is currently being rolled out in the UK and Canadian markets. There are also plans to launch the platform in France, Germany and Italy.
Prior to Scrambly’s partnership with Veriff, the company had basic anti-fraud measures in place which failed to prevent fraud. These included simple IP, proxy email and ID checks. Fraudsters were able to circumvent these checks and set up fake accounts using residential proxies and VPNs. This activity put Scrambly’s customer reward budget under pressure and threatened to undermine the quality of advertising traffic the firm generated for clients. Scrambly needed to identify fraudsters and exclude them from their platform before they could interact with content, campaigns and advertisers.
Scrambly decided it needed to adopt the kind of robust know-your-customer (KYC) processes used within the fintech sector. The team did have some concerns, however, about the negative impact enhanced KYC checks could have on customer journeys and the cost of customer acquisition.
Illia Frantsevskyi, CTO and Co-Founder of Scrambly, says the first KYC solution his team reviewed failed to impress. According to Frantsevskyi, it was expensive, the API integration was complex, and the provider was inflexible when it came to personalizing the solution to meet Scrambly’s specific requirements.
“In contrast, Veriff was happy to personalize its offering, integration was easy, its pricing was transparent and its customer support was nothing short of amazing,” says Frantsevskyi.
“Just as important, the Veriff sales team appreciated that we’re a small company with a limited budget, so we were able to negotiate pricing on the basis that we committed to the solution for a year.”
Alexander Grankin, CEO and Co-Founder, explains that Veriff’s scalability also made the platform highly attractive. Scrambly may be relatively small right now, but it has an ambitious growth trajectory, with new markets, apps and websites going live soon. At the time of writing, Veriff’s ID verification solution can recognize 11,300 government-issued ID documents, giving it the global reach that Grankin and his team are looking for.
Scrambly primarily turned to Veriff to provide a comprehensive KYC-based fraud prevention solution. This involved accurately verifying customer name, age and address.
Veriff’s platform asks customers to take a quick selfie as well as a photo of their government-issued ID using their smartphone or tablet. An AI algorithm checks the selfie for liveness and realness in real time by comparing it to live video taken from the customer’s device with their express permission.
The selfie is then compared to photographs from the customer’s government-issued identity documents, which are also automatically checked and authenticated using AI. If Veriff’s platform is unable to verify customer ID, it automatically escalates the case to its highly trained verification team.
Grankin says: “Many of our competitors and advertisers have grown to accept that a certain level of fraud is inevitable within our industry. I think that’s wrong. I don’t care if a fraudster cashes out on $5 or $500. It’s the principle that matters and the corrosive effect that fraud can have on confidence and trust. Veriff agrees with me on this and that is why our partnership is so strong.”
Unlike its competitors, Scrambly operates a zero approval cash-withdrawal system. That means customers are paid superfast, without Scrambly reviewing and signing off individual payments. The speed of the platform’s expansion and its lack of anti-fraud processes meant Scrambly’s zero-approval approach was also a source of considerable risk.
However, the firm was able to adopt and integrate Veriff within a few days, shutting the door on fraudsters.
Since partnering with Veriff, Scrambly has also signed an exclusive contract with Playtika, a major Israeli-based mobile games developer with more than 35 million monthly active users. Without Veriff’s KYC verification solution Grankin says its Playtika contract and others would have been under threat.
“Thanks to the quality of KYC verification Veriff provides, we're in a really good position within the industry – protecting our budgets, nurturing the confidence of our clients and earning bigger revenues,” said Grankin. “There is no doubt in mind that we are now winning more new customers because of the robustness that Veriff adds to our business - it’s a differentiator and a really strong one.”
