The no-code approach: ‘playing Lego’ with apps

In the past few years, the no-code approach to IT development has gone rapidly mainstream. We spoke to Jeremy Joly, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at compliance and onboarding platform spektr, about the benefits of no-code and how Veriff’s solutions fit into their no-code ecosystem.

Not long ago, integrating new functionality into your business workflow meant wrestling with Python or dealing with one among the alphabet soup of programming languages out there – SQL, PHP, C++…

Now, with the rapid rise of no-code development platforms (NCDPs), even non-coders can effectively engage in IT development. spektr is a business built around the no-code approach, so, how does it work and how do Jeremy and his team find working with Veriff’s solutions as part of their platform?

No-code pioneers

Jeremy and his cofounders are relative veterans of the no-code world, having previously founded a no-code platform for onboarding, HelloFlow, that was acquired by Trulioo in 2022. spektr occupies a similar niche but is designed to incorporate more elements to cover a wider range of use cases.

A holistic tool

‘The market today is pretty fragmented in terms of compliance and risk,” comments Jeremy. “There are a lot of players out there that are very good at doing what they're doing. But if you’re looking for a more holistic tool that can put the cement between all these different blocks, that doesn't really exist.’

Orchestrating compliance and risk

Through their conversations with compliance teams, Jeremy and his cofounders had realized that they were having to juggle a range of apps to cover different aspects of the job, from case management and identity verification to fraud and anti-money laundering (AML). At the same time, because information wasn’t centralized, data was often lost. spektr creates a single space where all the disparate modules and blocks that form part of an organization’s compliance and risk processes can be centralized and organized.

‘What spektr is trying to do is orchestrate all these different bits together,’ says Jeremy. ‘The processes that they usually do either in their CRM system or even manually on spreadsheets.’

The platform lets professional users integrate their client data, automate compliance, and speed up onboarding, using no-code tools that they can adapt to their specific needs. Once the solution is up and running, many tasks are automated, freeing up compliance and risk teams to focus on using their expertise to identify and address problems.

As spektr’s website puts it, ‘it’s that simple’.

No coder required

The beauty of a no-code solution like spektr’s is that because it’s based around a highly visual, graphical interface, you don’t need a team of IT experts to quickly build a bespoke solution. Instead, compliance and risk experts can be directly involved in designing the process themselves.

‘We give them access to the platform. Then they can build a process, or we build a process with them together. Then they get to test it and it's almost immediate,’ explains Jeremy. ‘As soon as they have a process that looks like something they want to use and can capture the information they want to capture, they can expose it directly to their end user. So, it can take as little as a day.’

As a quote from Veriff’s own Luke Ashley on the spektr website puts it: ‘The simplicity of spektr’s design is impressive; despite handling complex tasks, it’s incredibly intuitive and easy to use.’

Easy adaptability

Spektr describes its platform as ‘hyper-configurable’; this flexibility makes it possible to create a whole suite of onboarding process customized for specific use cases.

‘You can build as many onboarding processes as you want, and they might have a tiny little tweak because you're deploying them in different jurisdictions,’ says Jeremy. ‘Or you may deploy them for different types of clients, which is another angle – companies versus individuals is one very obvious difference.’

How Veriff’s solutions fit in

Having partnered successfully with Veriff for the compliance and fraud checking aspect of HelloFlow, the team were keen to repeat the experience with spektr.

‘The global reach that Veriff has and supporting all sorts of different identity documentation, that just basically gives us a very good place to be when it comes to servicing all these complex use cases,’ says Jeremy.

He also points to how scalable and quick to implement Veriff’s onboarding solutions are: ‘I think it took shy of three weeks to integrate with Veriff. So that was very fast.’

Finally, given the kind of clients spektr is working with, accuracy and reliability were a key factor.

‘They want that onboarding process to be flawless, because every time it doesn’t work, it’s money they lose immediately.’

The new normal

‘With our first venture, HelloFlow, back in 2021, we were kind of at the forefront of this no-code platform idea,’ comments Jeremy.

He acknowledges that in the intervening three years, the IT development landscape has changed significantly.

‘There’s a plethora of different platforms out there offering no-code. It’s just a place you have to be now, whereas before we were basically a bit ahead of our time.’

spektr seeks to stay ahead of the crowd by offering an API that makes it possible to customize its front end. This enables clients to use their own branding and UX and embed the platform fully into their already-existing processes. Beyond that, further development will be focused on making spektr ever more configurable.

‘Basically, add modules to our platform in order for our clients to just play Lego with it,’ says Jeremy.
